Your Ideal
Holiday

"If you think you're enlightened,
go home for the holidays." - Ram Dass
The holidays are upon us and while we hear phrases like "peace on
earth" and "joy to the world", we may be feeling anything
but peace and joy!
For many of us, the holidays can feel like a frantic time of overload,
stress and pressure to get the right gifts, prepare the perfect holiday
celebrations, volunteer to help those in need, attend a multitude of
holiday gatherings and/or hang out with people we'd really rather not, or
alternatively, spend time feeling alone and lonely.
It feels exhausting just writing that! But the good news is we have a
choice about how we co-create our holiday experience. I invite you to
examine (and then release if necessary) some of the beliefs you have
about the holidays and then proactively create your ideal holiday this
year.
For me this includes keeping it simple; planning ahead to spend quality
time with people I love and really want to be with; minimizing time with
people I don't feel good around; making sure I support my well- being by
getting plenty of rest, exercise, and eating healthfully; meditating;
making sure I have some alone time and time in nature.
It also includes removing the expectation that the actual day of a
holiday has to be the day for something extraordinary to happen.
Every day can be extraordinary and filled with potential for loving
connection, joyful surprises and magical moments when we least expect it.
My intention then is to focus on being present and available to the magic
that's always available whether the calendar says it's a
"special" day or not.
What would your Ideal Holiday look like? What would it feel like?
Who would you be with? What would you be doing? What would you delete
from your To Do list? Give yourself permission to create your holiday in
a way that honors this sacred time and truly brings you peace and joy.
Finally, in contemplating giving and receiving, I want to share some
wisdom from a study which asked over 200,000 people, "How do you
most feel loved?" Here are the top six responses.
I feel most loved when:
1. I am truly listened to; when I feel someone really wants to know me,
what I care about, what I'm thinking and feeling.
2. I am praised and acknowledged; when someone looks for the good in me
and acknowledges it.
3. Someone reaches out with physical touch - pats me on the back, gives
me a hug, holds my hand.
4. Someone encourages me, helps me believe I can do something I want to
do.
5. Someone gives me honest, caring and loving feedback.
6. People keep their agreements with me. I can count on their word.
Let's honor the true spirit of the season by giving generously to
ourselves and others in these simple ways. Let this be your portal to
peace, joy and loving connection throughout the holidays and on into the
glorious New Year.
"Go out into the world today and love the people you meet. Let
your presence light new light in the hearts of people." - Mother
Teresa
Peace, joy and abundant blessings!
