"A woman in harmony with her spirit
is like a river flowing. She goes where she will without pretense and
arrives at her destination prepared to be herself and only herself."
- Maya Angelou
On Sunday, July 22, 2007, my dear friend, Mary Donovan, and I co-facilitated
our first Conscious Aging workshop at Santa Monica Yoga. We were
incredibly blessed by the amazing group of wise women who showed up and
so beautifully shared their stories, their challenges and the
opportunities they see in aging consciously and well.
It was both healing and uplifting to come together in such a meaningful
way and to realize we're not alone in seeking to approach aging with
consciousness, optimism and deepening wisdom.
I wanted to share with you some of the gems I took away from the sharing
that day about what "conscious aging" means. I've listed some
of the highlights below.
Conscious aging is:
--Being present, releasing past regrets and future worries and enjoying
the present to the greatest extent possible.
--Complete acceptance/non-judgment of ourselves and where we are in our
lives.
--Not buying into the cultural messages about aging.
--Honoring, listening to, and taking care of our bodies.
--Valuing our wisdom, what we have to offer others.
--Being of service in the world.
--Loving kindness towards ourselves (including what we say to ourselves
when we look in the mirror!)
--Feeling and appreciating our inner beauty
--Creating a community of like-hearted women and sharing the healing
power of coming together to share our truths.
--Being pioneers, creating a more positive and supportive context for
women in midlife and beyond.
--Along with the sadness of our losses, allowing ourselves to acknowledge
new found freedoms and opportunities.
--Feeling the preciousness of each moment as we come to terms with our
physical mortality.
Thank you to all the women who participated in this first workshop. This
is a work in progress and given the response we received, we plan to
offer conscious aging workshops with different themes regularly. We also
plan to offer some workshops where men and women can come together to
explore this topic in a safe, mutually supportive environment.
We hope you'll join us in honoring the beauty, wisdom and possibilities
available to all of us in aging consciously and well.
Have a wonderful end of the summer!
Many blessings,
Carol

precious life." -- Mary Oliver
