second half of life. Midlife Journeys is a monthly newsletter
designed to support you in reconnecting with your authentic self and
energizing your life through deep self-nurturing, creative expression and
heart-centered living. Each issue contains inspiration and resources to help

A special note:
As we approach this Thanksgiving holiday, I want to extend a huge,
heartfelt thank you to each of you who reads my newsletter. I love
knowing you're out there and I get great pleasure from writing to you
each month. I also love receiving your feedback and comments.
For those of you who are my clients - thank you for courageously
sharing your lives, your wisdom and your breakthroughs with me. It is a
great privilege and pleasure to work with you. Each and every one of you
enriches my life immensely. I am so grateful to get to do this work that
brings me so much joy!
For those of you interested in exploring coaching (a great support for
your New Year's intention-setting!), I invite you to give me a call
(310-395-0441) or send me an email (carol@midlifejourneys.com). I'd be
happy to discuss with you how coaching can enrich your life and help you
create a life you truly love living. It is an extraordinary process!
And, of course, I greatly appreciate your referrals.
May we all feel gratitude, love, peace and joy filling our hearts as we
enter this holiday season. And may we share that gratitude, love, peace
and joy with everyone around us, creating a world for which we all feel
deeply grateful.
Many blessings and Happy Thanksgiving!
Carol
Fun reading for the holidays:
Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert
Leap: What Will We Do with the Rest of Our Lives? by Sara Davidson
Each book tells the story of a woman's journey through her midlife

The Purpose of
Your Life, Part 1
|
|

|
|
"Our purpose, I believe, is not a
thing, place, occupation, title, or even a talent. Our purpose is to be.
Our purpose is how we live life, not what role we live. Our purpose is
found each moment as we make choices to be who we really are." -
Carol Adrienne, The Purpose of Your Life
If someone were to ask you, "What is your life purpose?" what
would you say? When was the last time you asked yourself the age old
questions: "Who am I and what am I really doing here?"
"What is my life really about?"
In midlife, these questions can take on greater urgency. We may feel a
restlessness, a burning need to take a fresh look and deeply explore the
answers for ourselves. Our time feels more precious than ever and the
desire to spend it wisely and in fulfilling ways becomes heightened.
Joseph Campbell said that midlife crisis is when we get to the top of the
ladder and we realize the ladder was up against the wrong wall.
For many of us, we've spent the first part of our lives looking for
fulfillment and happiness in sources outside of ourselves - our careers,
relationships, children, homes, athletic pursuits, volunteer work --
whatever form it may have taken.
And we've enjoyed many meaningful experiences and learned many valuable
lessons along the way.
With the inevitable changes of life, however, and the impermanence of
jobs, relationships, roles, and our physical bodies, ultimately, even the
most successful people come to find out that what we were really seeking
was not "out there" after all. The source of our happiness and
purpose is within.
It's in our relationship with our self and our connection to our Higher
Self. It's in our loving connections with others and with Nature. Turning
down the internal pressure, the self-judgment and criticism, and lovingly
accepting who we are just as we are creates happiness. Extending that
loving acceptance to others, creates even greater peace and joy.
When we choose not to "demand against reality" and instead
accept whatever happens as an opportunity for growth and learning, we no
longer need to control circumstances or people around us in an attempt to
make ourselves feel better. We can relax and make the most of whatever
life brings our way.
From this place, our "purpose" becomes clearer: to remember who
we really are - loving, joyful and peaceful beings -- divine beings
having a human experience. And the people and circumstances in our lives
are the greatest teachers (sometimes the most challenging ones are the
best teachers!) for us to explore and deepen this awareness.
From this standpoint, the focus is less on what we do and more on
how we choose to be with ourselves and with others. Our action
flows naturally from our state of being.
I invite you to consider how your life would be different if you focused
more on being and embraced your humanness and that of others
(warts and all) with compassion, understanding and acceptance. What a
different world we'd be creating then!
"The joy of Being, which is the only true happiness, cannot come
to you through any form, possession, achievement, person or event -
through anything that happens. That joy cannot come to you - ever.
It emanates from the formless dimension within you, from consciousness
itself and thus is one with who you are." - Eckhart Tolle, A New
Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose
Love and joy to you,
Carol
